Heaven’s Gate No Bribe by Atta Kwami (Museum Accession Number R6110/1) Image copyright © Atta Kwami courtesy of Beardsmore Gallery

Atta Kwami’s work is rooted in his native Ghanaian heritage and visual culture. The painting’s title is taken from a religious slogan he saw on the side of a bus in Ghana. The design and colours in this painting are inspired by kente cloth, a textile that is synonymous with Ghana and that has surrounded and influenced Kwami all his life. Oil painting on canvas, collected as part of the Fashioning Africa project.
